Welcome to the Learn to Machine Sew course for beginners! I’m so excited to embark on this new adventure! Over the years of blogging about sewing, a huge number of my readers have commented on how much they love my projects, but that they don’t feel proficient enough with their sewing machine to attempt them. I’ve always urged them to try, but it was only a few months ago, as I guided my sister-in-law through some basics of her new sewing machine, that I realized just how daunting sewing can be to a true beginner.
I am a firm believer in the power of internet to teach people skills that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to learn (and I, myself, have learned so, so much this way) and I want to give my readers all the tools they need to complete my sewing projects and tutorials, so I decided to start a free sewing course for beginners right here on Cucicucicoo!
I have roughly 15 years of teaching experience of EFL/ESL, so I know how important it is to practice, practice, practice in practical situations. Therefore, I’ve set up this course in pairs of lessons. The first lesson of the week shows a sewing technique, like a regular classroom lesson, while the second lesson of the week will be a tutorial using that technique in a real-life project, like any other of the tutorials on this website. That way readers can learn the technique, practice it, and finally make something useful with it! The first week of the course is the only one without a project tutorial, just to get students used to the basic tools needed.
The syllabus below has links to all lessons and tutorials, and will be added to as we go along. So bookmark this page or just Pin It here to remember it!Do you publish sewing patterns or tutorials? Post one of these images in your website with a link to this post so that your readers can learn all the techniques they need to complete your projects!
If you don’t want to miss any of the lessons or practical tutorials in this course, sign up for my weekly newsletter! That way you’ll get notified of all the posts and also get free patterns and lots of other exclusive content!
How to use this course
Before you start machine sewing, you obviously need a sewing machine! If you don’t have one yet, first read this post on how to choose your first sewing machine.
Once you have a sewing machine, start with the first two lessons (Sewing Machine Anatomy and All About Fabric). You might also want to look at my series Cucicucicoo Recommends, in which I discuss the sewing supplies that I love. Following those lessons are a series of lessons on a specific technique followed by a practice tutorial to create something with that technique.
If you are an absolute beginner, follow the lessons in the order given in the Course Syllabus because the tutorials use ONLY the skills learned up til that point. Feel free to skip around if you already know some of the skills and techniques in the course, although I highly suggest reading them all, because there’s always something new to learn!
If you have any questions, leave a comment below or write to me at lisa (@) cucicucicoo.com. Happy sewing!
